Sectional point repair in Marietta: fixing one bad spot in an otherwise sound sewer line
Plenty of Marietta laterals do not need lining from end to end. If the camera finds a single open joint beneath the driveway with clean pipe running away from it in both directions, a short sleeve set at that spot may be the whole repair. This page explains when a sectional repair makes sense and when it does not.

The one-joint problem
A common pattern on a Marietta inspection: fifty feet of clean terracotta, then a single joint at the thirty-one-foot mark where a water oak's roots have forced the bell open and grown a mat that catches everything coming down the line. The rest of the pipe is round, the slope is fine, and the connection at the main is sound. Lining the whole run would fix the problem, but so would fixing the one joint. Sectional point repair is the method for that situation: a short cured-in-place sleeve, a few feet of material cut to suit the flaw, installed at the defect and nowhere else.
How a sleeve is set
The line is cleaned and inspected so the exact footage of the defect is known. A resin-soaked fiberglass or felt sleeve is rolled onto an inflatable bladder. The bladder is worked in through the cleanout to the measured distance, and the camera verifies that it sits squarely over the defect. It is inflated so the sleeve presses against the host pipe, and the resin cures in place with ambient or heated cure depending on the system. When the resin has set, the bladder is collapsed and recovered, and a rigid, bonded section bridging the joint stays behind. The camera records the result. On a typical Marietta lateral the whole operation fits in a half day.
Where it earns its keep in Cobb County
The method is most valuable where the single bad spot sits under something expensive. Laterals in Marietta run beneath concrete driveways, brick walkways, retaining walls and mature plantings, and on hilly lots the pipe can be deep enough that a spot dig means shoring and a dump truck of red clay. A sleeve reaches the defect from the cleanout without touching the surface. It also suits newer PVC lines, which rarely fail along their length but can crack at one glued joint or be crushed at one point by a later excavation. For a 1980s or 1990s house with a single PVC defect, a sleeve is often the entire repair. The service as offered locally is outlined on the Fletch Barney Trenchless, LLC sectional repair page for Marietta.
When a sleeve is the wrong answer
Point repair is a precise tool, and precision cuts both ways. If the camera shows root hair at every joint, sealing one joint leaves the next to fail in a few seasons, and the owner pays for the same mobilization again. If the pipe has ovaled, a sleeve cannot cure to a usable shape any more than a full liner can. If the defect is a belly, the sleeve simply takes the shape of the sag and water goes on standing there. And if the bad joint is badly offset, the packer may not seat properly; a short excavation may be the more honest fix. An installer who recommends a sleeve should be able to point at the footage and show that the rest of the Marietta lateral deserves to be left alone.
Permits and the paper trail
Even a small repair on a lateral in Marietta normally requires a plumbing permit, and a sleeve set near the tap in the right-of-way needs the corresponding permit as well. The job generates less paper than a full replacement but the essentials are the same: the pre-repair footage with the defect marked by distance, the post-repair footage showing the cured sleeve, the permit record and a written warranty from Fletch Barney Trenchless, LLC covering the repaired section. Keep them with the house records; a future buyer's inspector will see the sleeve on their own camera and want to know what it is.
Thinking ahead
A sectional repair buys a sound pipe more years without a larger investment, and for many Marietta homeowners that is the right trade. It also preserves the option to line the full lateral later, since a cured sleeve can be lined over if the remaining joints eventually fail. Treat the inspection video as a map of what is coming and ask the installer to note which joints looked marginal. The reference material on cured-in-place methods is at the CIPP reference site, and the standards installers meet to be listed are set out at how installers earn verification.

Questions we hear about sectional point repair
How long is a sectional sleeve?+
Usually between two and six feet, cut long enough to reach past the damage onto healthy pipe at both ends so the sleeve has something to bond to. One sleeve can cover a single cracked joint or two adjacent joints. Longer defects or several scattered ones tip the decision toward a full-length liner on a Marietta lateral.
Can a sectional repair be done under my driveway?+
Yes, and that is one of its best uses. The sleeve is positioned from a cleanout using the camera and the distance counter, so nothing above the pipe is disturbed. A single bad joint beneath a concrete drive or a brick walk in Cobb County is the classic case for a point repair rather than a dig.
Will roots come back at the repaired joint?+
Not through the sleeve. Once cured, the sleeve is a continuous sealed section with no joint for roots to enter. Roots can still find other joints in the same pipe later, which is why the installer should show you the condition of every joint on the video before recommending a point repair over a liner.
How long does the job take?+
A single sectional repair on a Marietta lateral is usually completed in a half day, including cleaning, positioning, cure and the verification video. The plumbing is out of service for a couple of hours during the cure. If more than one sleeve is set in the same visit, the day runs longer.
How do I decide between a sleeve and a full liner?+
Count the defects and look at the rest of the pipe. One or two bad joints with clean, round pipe elsewhere argue for sleeves. Several open joints spread along the run, or widespread root hair, argue for a liner, because the next joint to fail is only a few years behind. Fletch Barney Trenchless, LLC will show both options on the footage. Estimates are free; call now.
